Blind dog

I personally have never had a blind dog but my mom has. They went blind from old age and were in the house from the time they were born. Every time my mom used to get mad at my dad (he was a musician so he worked at night) she would move all of the furniture or throw it all out the door. As the dogs got older she had to stop that. My dad died last year in May and she misses him coming him and running into furniture or trying to sit in his chair in the dark and landing on the floor because it was gone.
Anyway, when the mother dog went blind and she would move everything what she did was let the dog out into the fenced in yard and then walk her through to the room where she had moved stuff(usually the living room and dining room) and slowly take her from couch to chair and when they got close to something she would take the dogs paw and reach it out to touch what was there and then do the same thing to the space where it used to be. she did that all over the room. I had a blind cat and I did the same thing. He even did fine when he was already blind and I left my husband and for 2 weeks had to stay with my parents(he was running and jumping all over their house at age 17 then I rented a house for 4 months and did the same then I bought a house and he did the same thing again until the day he passed away. They seem to do better than we do. Also, when my moms dogs went blind they would go out into the fenced in yard but to go for a walk (at that time she only had 1 dog that way blind left) my parents had adopted a dashound that had been rescued from a pound then given up after 4 years and she walked in and took control but when we took the blind dog and her for a walk, she walked right up against the blind dog so he knew he was safe and if he fell behind she would give him a nudge(the blind dog was pretty much deaf too, he was 19).Basically they will figure it out themselves from what I've seen. Just keep a close eye on them and let them bump into things once in a while. I'm no expert tho. Good luck and my moms favorite dog is dashounds they are tough and usually get what they want. Good Luck.

Blind dog

You may write to me anytime. Our daughter, Katie, has been rescuing blind critters for a long time. She had a blind goat for years (had to get him a "seeing-eye" goat friend--worked great). She still has one blind pony, but Taffy didn't go blind until she was an old lady, and just took it stride. Last year she adopted a kitten that was blind from birth. It's amazing how that little guy gets around -- jumps, runs, and has no clue he's any different from the rest of the managerie.

2 weeks ago, Katie took in Marley, a 6 months old healer?, blind from birth. It took him about 30 seconds to steal their hearts. Here is a link to Marlely's page:

This is my first time, here. I'm researching "special needs" resources for Love Your Pet Expo. I'll add a link to this forum right now.

Best of luck with your blind dog. If there's anything we can do to help, just let me know.
