I have a 5 year old beautiful baby cat named Turtle. I have had her since she was 2 weeks old and she is my baby! Approximately 2 months ago, an ex-boyfriend was startled when Turtle jumped on his chest and he kind of slung her off of him. The next day I noticed she appeared to be having difficulty jumping, but she could get around. The next day she appeared a wee bit worse but was still getting around. I left her that day to go do a job that I thought was a one day affair, but it actually turned into a 6 day affair. She was basically by herself in a trailer for those 6 days, but was checked on, fed, etc. each day. By the 6th day, the person that was looking out for her brought her to me and I was mortified. She looked like HELL. She was covered in her own poop and smelled horrible. She was very agitated and was hissing at me. I picked her up, and she cried out in pain and when I set her down, I noticed she was dragging her hind legs to the side and could hardly get about.
I immediately took her to the hospital and they actaully thought she had been hit by a car. SHe was so aggressive they had to sedate her to even do anything to her. They x-rayed her and found nothing. They were going to keep her overnight for observation but when they saw her reaction to me, they insisted that she was way better off to be with me. Although she remained in really bad shape, her emotional state was improving by being with me. I took her to another vet and they couldn't find out what was wrong with her either. After $800 in vet bills, they finally referred me to a neurologist. I took her to the neurologist and after examining her, they proceeded to tell me the could be's, and wanted a $3000 deposit to do anything. They suspected a possible slipped disk, but said that there is a fungal infection very common here in the San Diego area that cats get called Cryptococcus. They get this by breathing the dust from pigeon poop, and it usually attacks when a cats immune system is low. People can also get it and it is found in a lot of AIDS patientsm, but you cannot get it from pet to human. Anyway, the fungal infection attacks the CNS and they said could cause the same symptoms that Turtle had. They said they would run that test first to rule it out before proceeding to a MRI. I just knew that it wasn't that and my first gut instinct was she had slipped a disk and it was pressing on a nerve causing her to be paralyzed. I was told the best diagnosis would be the Cryptococcus because with medication, they have an excellent full recovery rate. Well, they informed me she was positive for this and we began meds. Well her condition became worse! She began having seizures. She had 10 or 11 in one day and i didnt think she would make it. Money being the issue, I had to take her home and just wait it out with her. Everyone told me I should put her down, and this cat is like my child. I would sit and hold her and just sob...begging her and God for her to get better and for her to fight. I was told that it is a slow recovery that could take as long as 6 months. ALthough she improved drastically in so many ways, she was still unable to use her hind legs and control her bladder and bowels..which meant I was giving her baths daily to keep her clean. I haven't let her out of my sight at all for fear she would have a seizure or get hurt or something.
Last week, I took her back to the doctor and was told she wouldn't be getting any better, and that she would be permanently paralyzed to the extent of the damage that was caused. This absolutely devestated me. They said she isn't in pain and isn't suffering but that I would be taking care of her like this for as long as she lived. The thought of not doing that, to me, wasn't even an option. And, quite honestly I am not convinced that Crypto is the primary cause of her condition . I think she sustained injury to her spine, and because she was away from me for 6 days (never having been away from me before), she shut down, and then contracted the Crypto. Maybe not! Is there anyone out there that has had any cryptococcus experience?
Also, am I doing the right thing to keep her with me? I love her and treat this cat better than a lot of humans are treated. She goes to work with me, sleeps with me every night, and it's a mutual love we have for each other. Also, any tips on dealing with the bathroom issues? DO they have diapers. I am also checking into the pet wheelchair for her. Am I being selfish? She still has so much fight left in her, and quite honestly, the thought of her being gone, is more than I think I could handle. I love her more now than ever! Anyone have any feedback, tips, stories, anything to help me in any way? I am open to any and all suggestions.
